Making Lemonaide

Lemonaide is a medical-grade cane that grew from both a need and a desire.

I was coming home from work one evening when I was hit by a car. Post-surgery and during the first phase of physical therapy, it was clear I needed support. My physical therapist handed me a cane. Of course I did not welcome it, but I knew I needed it, and it did make a difference in my mobility as well as managing the pain.

Disliking the cane's appearance is an understatement. Before the accident I had been an athletic person who also liked to get dressed and enjoy fashion every day. It was a way to express my personal style. But the cane made me feel disconnected, viewed in a stigmatized way, and less like my true self.

The cane was antiquated and it did a disservice to countless outfits. To make matters worse, when I found other medical-grade canes in the marketplace they were no different — clinical, old-fashioned and boring.

I thought I could create a new medical-grade cane that was multi-functional, smartly interchangeable and fashionable. One that worked like an accessory while also providing the needed support. Something that gave me energy, confidence and style.

I started to think the cane I'd wanted to carry could be the cane many people would prefer to carry. My story and the Lemonaide cane that is steadily evolving, are what I call making Lemonaide out of life's lemons.
